Teaching Philosophy Statement

I consider teaching one of my most enjoyable and fulfilling experiences. As a current adjunct professor at Villa Maria College, I have found my students to be engaging and unique. I remain excited about teaching and I want to pass on my passion for knowledge to interested students in an approachable manner. When I prepare for a class, I work diligently to completely understand the class topics, to present the material in a comprehensive way, and provide students with effective resources. Teaching game design to a diverse group of students is satisfying as each student brings a unique perspective, artistic flare, and comprehension of the material.

I feel a successful teaching process must be student centered, which includes involvement in each lesson. I prepare for each individual class by presenting introductory topic material, then have an interactive discussion, and finally give an in-depth lesson for the day’s topic. At the end of class, I always take time to answer student questions and concerns. I also make myself available to stay after class if needed and provide students another way to contact me after class. I believe students must have an instructor who is interested in their individual learning experience as each student has diverse needs.

My objective for teaching is to make sure students understand the focal points of each lesson. That is why, as a part of the curriculum, I have check-ins with the students to make sure the student is comprehending the material and able to complete the class in a one-on-one environment. This allows for private discussions to elevate the student teacher relationship and address concerns. I will assist my students to express themselves, accept themselves, and embrace the differences in others.to express themselves, accept themselves, and embrace the differences in others.
